Florence and The Machine: Silhouettes and Light

I went to see Florence at the NEC and I was hoping that this would inspire my showtime theme. The sets were beautiful, light projected onto screens in Art Nouveau patterns.

I was inspired by the Spotlights layering over one another. This relates well to my layering techniques in my sketchbook and reminded me of cut outs and light shining through trees.

It has also got me thinking about how the spotlight colours overlap to create new colours, something to possibly experiment with, both in my sketchbook and printing samples.

I also got some inspiration from
Florence's grand costume choices.
She wore flowing gowns and these
created interesting silhouettes against
the spotlights.

After the gig I began to look at artists who work with silhouettes. My favourite is Rob Ryan who works with cutting techniques.
He came from a screen printing background which lead him to papercutting, and often his designs are translated back into screen prints. Much of his work has a fairytale like quality which is something I really like because delicate stories lend themselves well to the fragility of paper cutting.

'Have lots of fun. Make your art part of your entire life and never stop thinking, drawing and dreaming.'- Rob Ryan, November 4th 2010, Art Talks blog.
