Dame Vivienne Westwood and Tartan

Vivienne Westwood has changed the perception of plaid. From her punk day beginning in the 70's with the opening of her boutique shop in the King's Road tartan has played a huge part in Vivienne's fashion designs.

She seems to have a fascination with Scottish traditions.  For her landmark collection titled "Harris Tweed" (named after the woollen fabric hand-woven in the Western Isles of Scotland) in 1988-87 she parodied the clothes of boarding schools, royalty and upper class country folk.

Her interest in Scottish traditions seemed to peak in her 'Anglomania' collection in Autumn/Winter 1993.  Within this collection she used tartan cloth custom made by the famous Lochcarron weaving house in Scotland.   She even had her own design of tartan created and named after her husband the 'McAndreas'.

Using a mix of different tartans including the 'McAndreas', her ensembles exploited the endless opportunities of colour and layout that can be achieved with a checked pattern.

Even in the present day Vivienne Westwood is continuing her production of fashion designs utilising tartan and has even moved this into interior settings. Designing a range for Cole & Son Wallpapers she has taken inspiration from her fashion designs over the years and has translated them into 2D for this particular project. Unsurprisingly tartan plays a big role including bold close ups of her checkered creations and interestingly enlarged close up images of woven cloth.
